Your First Flight: What Really Happens on a Discovery Flight
You've looked up at every small plane that's flown over you. A discovery flight is how you finally find out what it feels like from the left seat. It's a real lesson in a real airplane, with your hands on the controls and a flight instructor right beside you. No experience needed and no strings attached.
Here's exactly what happens when you book one with us at Tampa Executive Airport.
Before you show up
When you book, I'll ask for your height and weight. Not because I'm nosy. Every flight starts with a weight and balance calculation, the math that makes sure the airplane is loaded safely. I'll also check the weather the day before and again that morning. In Tampa Bay summers, that usually means flying in the morning, before the afternoon thunderstorms show up and the air gets bumpy.
What to bring:
| What to bring | Why |
|---|---|
| A photo ID | Your driver's license works. |
| Sunglasses | Non-polarized if you have them. Polarized lenses can make some cockpit screens hard to read. |
| Comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes | You'll steer on the ground with your feet. (Yes, really.) |
| Water and a light meal beforehand | An empty stomach is the most common reason people feel queasy. |
On the ground: about 20 minutes
We'll start with a quick briefing. I'll show you how the controls work, what we'll do in the air, and what you'll be flying. Then we'll walk out to the Cessna 172 and do the preflight inspection together: fuel, oil, tires, control surfaces, and everything else pilots check before every single flight.
Ask anything. Nothing is too basic. Every pilot you've ever flown with started exactly where you are.
In the air: about an hour
You'll taxi to the runway yourself. Depending on the conditions, you may even make the takeoff, with my hands close by. Once we're climbing out over the water, the airplane is yours.
We'll work on the first things every pilot learns: climbs, descents and turns, keeping the airplane smooth and level. Most people are surprised how fast it starts to feel natural. And the view of the Gulf beaches, the bridges and Tampa Bay? Your new office has a better view than your old one.
I'll handle the radios and watch for traffic so you can focus on flying. Coming back, I'll talk you through the approach and landing. Most first-timers let me take the landing, but if you want to keep your hands on the controls with me, we'll do it together.
After we land
We'll debrief what you did well, which is usually more than you expect. Then, if you want to keep going, we'll talk straight about what's next: how often to fly, what a realistic timeline looks like for you, and what the Private Pilot certificate really costs. No pressure, no sales pitch.
Bonus: because you flew with a CFI (certified flight instructor), that hour can count as flight training. Grab a pilot logbook, and your discovery flight becomes entry number one.
Quick answers
Do I need any experience? None. This flight is made for people who have never sat up front in a small airplane.
Is it safe? Safety comes first on every flight. You'll fly with an FAA-certificated instructor in an inspected, maintained airplane. If the weather isn't right, we don't go. We reschedule, and that's the job done right.
What if I'm nervous? Good. It means you're taking this seriously, and every pilot started there. Nerves usually fade within the first few minutes, and you can hand me the controls any time.
How much is it? A flat $199 for about an hour in the air. Our hourly rates for training are on the pricing page.
Your first takeoff is closer than you think
The only way to know if flying is for you is to try it. Book your discovery flight, and I'll see you at Tampa Executive Airport.
